Serbian nationalism developed over a long period of time. Austria-Hungary, the rulers of Serbia, kept a very short leash on the semi-autonomous Serbs. Nationalist tensions steadily grew until they broke out in a horrible political murder in June 1914. Still, because of nationalism, the two countries were unable to resolve their differences diplomatically, and open war broke out. Because of a string of alliances, the Great Powers soon became involved in what is now known as World War I.
